At the Zoo, I Was Reminded Why Most Transformations Stall—They Forget the People in the Cage

Yesterday, I wandered through London Zoo (in over 30-degree heat) —and here’s the thing: even the animals knew better. Most were hiding, refusing to entertain us in the slightest. The meerkats had unionised. The lions looked personally offended. And frankly, I couldn’t blame them.

But in between searching for shade and sympathy, I noticed something else. Every enclosure was meticulously designed—replicating natural habitats with absolute precision. But it wasn’t the architecture that held my attention. It was the animals themselves.

Their reactions to each other. Their play. Their tension. Their adaptability

The real story wasn’t the habitat. It was the life inside it.

And suddenly, it struck me: so many organisations treat transformation like building an exhibit—obsessing over enclosures. Frameworks. Technology stacks. KPIs. Dashboards.

But true transformation doesn’t thrive on structure alone. It lives or dies by human dynamics.

Leadership. Trust. Psychological safety. Shared energy.

These aren’t ‘soft skills’ or side quests—they’re the terrain itself. Without them, even the most beautifully designed strategy becomes performative… sterile… lifeless.

It reminded me exactly why I started this series in the first place—to explore the often-overlooked forces that make or break transformation. Not just strategy and technology, but clarity, culture, and the human experience at the heart of change.

Next up: where human insight still eclipses automation—and why intelligent systems still need emotional intelligence.

But in the meantime, here’s what I’ve been reflecting on (somewhere between the penguin pool and the heatstroke): Is your organisation designing smarter enclosures—or nurturing what happens inside them?
